Responsive Design (tiny rant)

August 20, 2026

The web is naturally responsive, designers just like to create their own problems.

Before making this site, of course I did a lot of self study and research about coding a site. And one problem I kept seeing is that many designers try to force their designs to fit specific screen sizes instead of letting the web adapt naturally.

For example, the 6 breakpoints for a single design are both adding too much work and don't account for the wide variety of devices and screen sizes available. The chance of your website being displayed on a chinese "smart" watch is low but never 0.

Many sites from way back then still looks great on modern devices (except the fact that the fonts are tiny because tiny screen res). A huge part of that is because they don't try to bloat the site with Fresh New Things to make sites looks Fancy. They do but like they also have a point

No crazy 24 different js files or 500kb of css, they rawdog that shit with mostly raw (and accessible, mind you) html. Yeah it looks kinda ugly but at the same time it's functional on all kinds of stuff.

If you're making your own website from scratch, remember that the web is already flexible and adaptable. Raw HTML and minimal CSS can go a long way.

For inspo on how CSS is ultra powerful without external libraries, CSS Zen Garden have sites dating back to 2003. Most of them still looks great on modern browsers.
